There are no specific events recorded for today in the gospels and we shall continue looking at various historical & archaeological articles giving insight into the Bible and its background. WHAT IS JESUS DOING?Jesus has travelled from Nazareth to Capernaum, which He will now make His home-town. Today He is observing Sabbath and attending in Synagogue. Having first pased through the Outer Court with its Altar of Burnt Offering, the priest would then have entered the Holy Place or Inner Court. Beyond this was the raised, small and square room, called the Holiest Place or Holy of Holies. It was here that divinity resided. In the Arad temple, as we approach, the Holy of Holies we are struck by the existence of two incense altars and two standing stones. Whilst, at some time, YHWH may have been worshiped here it was not in the way the Torah prescribed. It is possible that the people who worshiped here had an understanding of YHWH having a wife! It was this intermingling of the local Canaanite traditions and lore which the Prophets of YHWH spoke out against so often. Even in the Jerusalem Temple we read more than once of such pagan practices; for an example read Ezekiel chapter 8.
